Every year, around the holidays, some of my students and their families give me gift certificates for holiday presents. I received a particularly generous one last year, and I wasn't quite sure what to spend it on. I had already received the coat and the iPod that were on my wish list. There wasn't anything else I really needed or desired.

No such luck. All I can do is admire it, watch the colors flash in the light, and then put it away again.

This year, when my husband asked me for my holiday wish list, my one request was this: I would like to take this ring to a jeweler and have it sized for my right hand.
